The VIS initiative intends to play a key role in the birth of eHealth and digital revolution in the Kenyan health sector through a number of practical steps:

  1. Leading in the identification and implementation of affordable network infrastructure and computer hardware in public health facilities
  2. Collaboratively designing, developing and implementing software solutions for clinical and public health service and research
  3. Working with other individuals, groups and organisations involved with the development, interpretation and implementation of a National eHealth policy
  4. Developing interoperable systems that can collect and aggregate real-time routine health data from health facilities to strengthen local and national disease surveillance
  5. Providing consultancy in development of digital solutions for health service and research needs
  6. Designing and effecting electronic linkage between clinical databases and the vital registry systems to automate processes of registering births and deaths occurring in health facilities
  7. Designing epidemiological databases and research systems linking known communities/populations to catchment health facilities to facilitate population-based health interventions and studies
  8. Supporting the establishment of disease-specific registries by linkage of such registries with point of care electronic medical records to eliminate delayed data entry
  9. Conducting research to evaluate the impact of eHealth solutions
